Four athletes, including Asian Games double gold medallist Ashwini Akkunji, on Thursday challenged their one-year suspensions in the anti-doping appeal panel. The anti-doping disciplinary panel had handed the suspensions to six athletes, including three members of India’s 4x400m gold medal-winning team at the Delhi Commonwealth Games and the Guangzhou Asiad.Out of the six, Ashwini, Sini Jose, Priyanka Panwar and Tiana Mary Thomas have appealed against the verdict, which virtually put paid to their chances of representing the country at the London Olympics this year. However, in an attempt to enhance their chances of qualifying for the Games, the athletes have challenged the decision and will seek a reduced sanction or complete exoneration. The three-member anti-doping disciplinary panel, headed by Dinesh Dayal, in its ruling decided that the time spent by the athletes under provisional suspension will be taken into account. That means the suspension slapped on Ashwini and Priyanka will last till July 3 while the same for Sini and Tiana ends on June 29 – a month before the start of the Olympics. But they are unlikely to compete in London if the bans are not reduced as the qualifying period for relay teams ends on July 2 while for the individual events it closes on July 8.Besides, the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) is also preparing its appeal and is likely to ask for a stricter sanction ranging from two to four years.”The NADA lawyers have studied the order and we are in the process of filing the appeal. The appeal has to be filed within 14 days of the first order but in this case we might take a couple of days more,” said a source in the NADA.advertisementMandeep Kaur and Jauna Murmu were also amongst those handed suspensions after they flunked dope tests conducted by the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF). In all probability, IAAF will also appeal for an increased sanction with the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS).Panel won’t release contentious listThe anti-doping disciplinary panel on Thursday turned down a request from Dalbir Singh to release the names of those athletes who had tested positive for banned substances between 1991 and 2000.The panel, headed by Sudhir Nandrajog, had earlier released a list of athletes who tested positive between 2001 and 2009. However, on Thursday, when Dalbir asked the panel to hand over a copy of the list for the years 1991- 2000, Nandrajog turned down his request. The chairman of the panel said that at some stage during the hearings, he will release the list but for the time being it will remain in possession of the panel. As per the directions of the panel, the NADA had asked 10 national sports federations about athletes who had flunked dope tests between 1991 and 2000 and the action taken against them.Seven sports bodies have replied and except for the judo federation, all have claimed that either the records were not available with them or they have been destroyed. The list could have some prominent names who failed dope tests without any action taken against them. Dalbir claims that the federations were at fault and needed to be penalised. However, Nandrajog said penalising the federations is beyond the jurisdiction of the panel and it can only impose suspension on the athletes, most of whom are retired now.

Batting legend Sachin Tendulkar has posted a selfie with daughter Sara on Facebook as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s #SelfieWithDaughter initiative. Sachin who is holidaying with his family in Europe posted the picture which has been liked by more than 60,000 people. The PM, during his radio show, Maan Ki Baat (On My Mind) on June 28, launched the hashtag #SelfieWithDaughter, to draw attention to India’s plummeting sex ratio. But the scenario for the future is grim because India’s declining child sex-ratio indicates that girls are increasingly being aborted, killed or otherwise dying. The overall sex ratio in 1921 was 955 women per 1,000 men, declining to 946 in 1951 and to 943 today. The child sex-ratio was 983 girls per 1,000 boys in 1951, declining to 918 in 2011, the lowest in the seven decades since it was counted. The rate of decline has worsened in the years during which the overall sex ratio began to improve. This corresponds to the decades following 1981, offering evidence of sex-determination tests, selective abortion and female infanticide.Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, chef Sanjeev Kapoor, Smriti Irani and many more shared selfies with their daughters on Twitter.
