Figure 1. Building Real-Time Thermal MapsHardware-agnostic Intel DCM SDK offers broad support for server hardware and software. Web Services Description Language (WSDL) APIs simplify integration with management consoles. This means console vendors, system integrators, and enterprises can also take advantage of these interfaces to build Intel DCM functionality into applications.Intel DCM in ActionIn southern Korea, KT Corporation wanted to increase the compute density in its Mok-dong data centre. The power available to the centre—5MW maximum—must cover both servers and cooling. KT used Intel DCM during a three-month evaluation of workloads, temperatures, and power usage in a high-temperature （HTA）data centre. Inlet thermal monitoring of node temperatures was a key capability for identifying potential hot spots in real time. The study showed KT how to:· Significantly boost the efficiency of chillers and CRAC equipment, with adjustments to the chilled-water-loop temperature and rack configurations· Gain power efficiency improvements using server virtualization· Automatically decrease power consumption for idle nodes· Identify abnormal thermal events, and appropriately manage cooling resources to avoid service impact· Monitor ongoing impacts on cooling as servers are added· Optimize wet-side and air-side economizer designs for future data centre sites ConclusionConsidering the current conditions within the global energy market, there is no hope that the cost of power will come down soon, if ever. Tools such as Intel DCM are essential for reducing waste and getting the most out of every purchased energy unit whether it goes directly to a server or indirectly to the associated cooling system. Data centre managers are using the real-time, aggregated monitoring, control, and trending data to drive up server rack densities without exceeding cooling capacity. Thermal maps are helping them refine integrated cooling and air-flow systems and identify areas of wasted power (heat). The power management stack can also enable power throttling, to avoid exceeding cooling capabilities or to stay within a set budget for cooling. To read more about Intel DCM and related power management solutions, please visit: http://software.intel.com/datacentermanager.* * * * * * *Reference: White paper: “How High Temperature Data Centers & Intel Technologies at Korea Telecom save Energy, Money, Water and Greenhouse Gas Emissions,” Intel Corporation, http://software.intel.com/sites/datacentermanager/whitepaper.php As the Director of Data Center Solutions at Intel Corporation, Jeffrey S. Klaus leads a global team that designs, builds, sells, and supports Intel DCM, the only software that provides real-time, server-level data on the power and thermal conditions across a wide range of data center servers and other equipment. Provided as an SDK, Intel DCM is integrated into Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) consoles to increase data centers’ power and thermal efficiency by as much as 40 percent and help facilities managers to better contain costs. He can be reached at [email protected] Please note: This blog originally appeared in the May/June issue of Data Centre Management To drive down cooling costs in the data centre, you have to eliminate inefficiencies on the demand side and supply side. It requires lowering power consumption for the servers and the cooling systems themselves. Intel offers a middleware solution that helps data centre managers tackle cooling from both directions. Instead of focusing solely on return air temperature at the air-conditioning units, Intel® Data Center Manager (Intel® DCM) promotes holistic data centre efficiencies by focusing on real-time server power and thermal characteristics.Intel DCM middleware, with web service APIs, creates a power management solution stack for the data centre. Power consumption and server inlet temperatures are monitored for each server, without requiring any agent on the individual servers. Results can be aggregated for racks, rows, the room, or physical or logical groups of servers.Unlike predictive models that are based on static data sets that need refreshing/updating with every new server platform upgrade, Intel DCM introduces real-time monitoring and control. The resulting visibility identifies potential hot spots and computer-area air handler (CRAH) failures easily, enabling proactive actions to avoid the abnormal. Accurate, real-time data also makes it possible to set thresholds and alerts, and enforce policies that optimize service and efficiencies.By aggregating server inlet temperatures, Intel DCM enables the creation of real-time thermal maps of the data centre (see Figure 1). Gathered data can also be logged and used for trending analysis as well as in-depth airflow studies for improving thermal profiles and avoiding over- or under-cooling. The granularity and accuracy make it possible to fine-tune cooling instead of designing systems based on worst-case scenarios.

New Delhi: With several international airlines banning some older models of Apple’s flagship laptop MacBook Pro in both check-in or hand luggage, including in India, fears of battery fire have returned to haunt users of the device. In June, Apple announced a voluntary recall of its faulty 15-inch MacBook Pro laptops. According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), there’s a chance that the devices sold between September 2015 and February 2017 could overheat and potentially cause fires. Also Read – Swiggy now in 500 Indian cities, targets 100 more this year The iPhone-maker reportedly said it had received 26 reports of the laptop’s battery overheating, with as many as five consumers reporting minor burns and one suffering from smoke inhalation. Nearly 432,000 potentially affected MacBook Pro units were sold in the US and 26,000 in Canada. Apple issued a similar replacement programme last year for the latest 13-inch Pros over issues related to battery expansion. In 2016, battery fires in Samsung’s flagship smartphone Galaxy Note 7 caused the firm operating losses of some 6.1 trillion won ($5 billion). Also Read – New HP Pavilion x360 notebook with in-built Alexa in India Galaxy Note 7 “launched in August 2016 amid much fanfare” was poised to be in direct competition with the Apple flagship iPhone 7 and Google flagship Pixel. However, batteries started exploding and devices caught fire while charging, forcing the South Korean giant to recall 2.5 million units worldwide in September. The company encouraged Note 7 owners to swap their devices with new ones, but the replacement Note 7 devices too caught fire, leading to production being stalled in October. The Galaxy Note 7 device finally landed up in the junkyard. Samsung Electronics acknowledged that faulty battery caused its flagship Galaxy Note 7 to catch fire, after discontinuing the fire-prone device. A mix of thin separators between the positive and negative layers, abnormal squeeze in battery corners, abnormal bump in battery surface and absent insulating tape caused the Note 7s to explode and set on fire. MacBook Pro owners can use their laptop’s serial number to check on Apple’s website if the product is affected by the recall. The recall does not affect other units or Mac notebooks, says Apple. The United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has also banned the affected laptops on all flights.

MONTREAL – The updated and expanded Canadian-Israeli free trade deal includes a chapter on gender equality that is the first of its kind in the world, International Trade Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne said Monday.Canada’s new trade deal with Israel also maintains a controversial article that recognizes merchandise from occupied territories such as the West Bank as products of Israel. What’s unique to this trade agreement is the provision that places the chapter on gender equality under the scope of the dispute settlement mechanism of the larger agreement, Champagne said.“We are writing international law today,” Champagne said to Israeli Minister of the Economy Eli Cohen, who travelled to Montreal to sign the deal.“This is the only trade deal in the world with a chapter on gender that is subject to a dispute resolution.”Champagne and Cohen were scheduled to officially sign the updated agreement later on Monday at a private ceremony in Montreal closed to the media. Both governments need to ratify the deal before it enters into effect. The original free trade deal between Canada and Israel came into force in January 1997, which governed the roughly $1.7 billion in two-way merchandise trade between the two countries in 2017.Negotiations to update the agreement began under former prime minister Stephen Harper in 2014 and were concluded by the Trudeau Liberals. The new deal maintains a provision that requires merchandise from areas such as the West Bank to be labelled as products of Israel despite the fact Canada doesn’t recognize permanent Israeli control over that territory, which was occupied in 1967.A Winnipeg man is challenging a decision made by the federal food inspection agency in 2017 that allowed two wines produced in the West Bank region to be sold in Canada with the label “Product of Israel.”Under the trade agreement, “Israel” refers to any territory where the country’s customs laws are applied.Champagne said the new trade deal is in line with international law.“It’s a simple matter,” he said. “In international trade law, the way a territory is defined is the physical territory where the customs law apply.“We think the determination of Canadian food inspection agency is reasonable and acceptable.”The decision to include a chapter on gender equality came at Canada’s behest.Chapter 13 states both countries “acknowledge the importance of incorporating a gender perspective into the promotion of inclusive economic growth.”Cohen told the audience “we will learn from you and implement this (gender chapter) in our future free trade agreements.”“The agreement that we will sign later today (provides) free duties to more than 2,000 items in the food and agricultural sector,” Cohen added. Moreover, the updated deal expands market access for both countries and includes new chapters on issues such as e-commerce, intellectual property and labour.

New Delhi: CPI(M) has moved the Election Commission accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of trying to rouse communal passions in the country and using national broadcaster Doordarshan for electoral purposes.CPI(M) Politbureau member Nilotpal Basu in a letter to Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora has listed a slew of complaints against the BJP over what it termed were violations of the model code of conduct by the leaders of the saffron party, beginning from the PM’s address to the nation last month announcing that India had shot down a live satellite using anti-satellite missile technology. Also Read – Uddhav bats for ‘Sena CM'”Another blatant attempt by the Prime Minster Narendra Modi himself to rouse communal passions by implicitly referring to the outcome in a NIA Court, by equating the accused to the entire Hindu community in an election meeting in Wardha,” he said. An NIA court recently acquitted Swami Aseemanand and three others in the 2007 Samjhauta train bomb blast case. A total of 68 people, mostly Pakistanis, were killed in the bombing. Slamming the Congress for the ‘Hindu terror’ metaphor, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Monday charged the opposition party with insulting “peace-loving” followers of the religion by linking them to terrorism. Basu also raised the issue of the PM allegedly using the national broadcaster to appeal to voters. Also Read – Farooq demands unconditional release of all detainees in J&K”The fundamental question was whether the Prime Minister, who is also a candidate of the BJP, can use the office and the prerogatives to try and influence for the sake of electoral benefit? However, the Commission chose to restrict the question to the role of the DD and gave the national broadcaster a clean chit. “Now, our attention has been drawn to a tweet by Doordarshan News @DDNewsLive for urging people to watch live the PM’s addresses for his #MainBhiChowkidar programme through video conferencing. The print-out of the tweet is appended herewith,” he said. Basu also said the CPIM had also complained to the EC gainst the “unabashed attempt” by the ruling party to use the post Balakot situation and utilise the exploits of the armed forces for electoral purposes. “The Commission had taken note and passed an order to categorically forbid such use of the armed forces in the election campaign. But now in clear violation of that order, the BJP leader and Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath has referred to the Indian Army as ‘Modi ji Ki Sena’ while addressing a rally in Ghaziabad on Monday, 1st April 2019,” he said, adding that these are “gross violations of the MCC” and has the potential of completely vitiating the social atmosphere in run up to the elections. The Election Commission on Monday took cognizance of Adityanath’s reported remarks and sought a report from Ghaziabad district administration in this regard.
New York: Actors Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Deepika Padukone took inspiration from fairytale characters for their 2019 Met Gala red carpet appearance, reminding fans that a little adventure goes a long way in fashion. The two Indian actors interpreted this year’s theme for the event, ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion’ in their own way. Priyanka, who first met husband Nick Jonas at the same event, seemed to have plucked a leaf out of Lewis Carroll’s fantasy classic, “Alice In Wonderland” and channelled self expression through a multishaded Dior gown in grey, yellow and pink with Chopard danglers. The actor completed the look with grey tinted eyebrows, eyes lined with a white eyeliner, dark maroon lip and shimmering sheer stockings. Styled by Mimi Cuttler, Priyanka also gave a nod to her Indian roots by using ‘bindis’, not one but three on her face. According to Deepika’s stylist Shaleena Nathani, the actor pitched her tent as a “Camp Barbie”. She chose a multi-layered Zac Posen 3D printed gown in a quintessential pink shade and bespoke jewels.
