Morning report: Motorcyclist dies in crash, gunmen sought in robbery, Hilton may have received special treatment and more

first_imgAdditionally, officials were allegedly ordered to give her a new jail uniform while many inmates use recycled ones. Two sheriff’s officials speaking on condition of anonymity confirmed those details of her incarceration. But Steve Whitmore, Baca’s spokesman, said the department’s information differed from what deputies told the union. “That’s why we need to let the investigation get to the bottom of it.” Michael Gennaco, chief attorney for the Sheriff’s Department’s Office of Independent Review, said that he would track the investigation “to make sure the department looks into these matters in an objective and thorough way.” Hilton recently served 23 days in custody for violating parole in an alcohol-related reckless driving case by repeatedly driving with a suspended license. Motorcyclist dies in crashA motorcyclist died from injuries he suffered in a hit- and-run crash accident on the southbound Hollywood (101) Freeway, authorities said today. The accident occurred around 10:40 p.m. yesterday near Highland Avenue, the CHP said. The CHP did not immediately release of the accident. The rider was taken to a hospital after the accident and died, officials said. Witnesses said a vehicle hit a motorcycle, crashed into the center divider, hit another vehicle, then crashed into a light pole as its female driver tried to get off the freeway on the Highland Avenue offramp. She then flagged down a passing motorist and rode off, the witnesses said. The Highland Avenue offramp was closed early this morning, Porter said. Police seek gunmen in robberyThree gunmen were at large today after robbing a 63- year-old man of $6,200 in cash and property at his Los Angeles home, authorities said. The three forced their way into the home at 2903 Griffith Ave., near Jefferson Boulevard, around 11 p.m. yesterday, and demanded money, police said. The victim, fearing for his life, complied, and the gunmen fled with $6,000 in cash and $200 worth of cellular phones, police said. Authorities believe his home was targeted based on the expectation that he had cash with him, police said. Gas prices drop 1.5 centsThe average price of a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline dropped 1.5 cents in Los Angeles County this week, the Automobile Club of Southern California reported today. The ninth consecutive weekly decrease in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area brought the average price of a gallon of self-serve regular to $3.099, 19 cents less than last month and at this time last year, according to the Auto Club’s Weekend Gas Watch survey. After rising for 14 consecutive weeks, the Los Angeles County average price fell 3.3 cents from June 29-July 6; 4.4 cents from June 22-29; 6.4 cents from June 15-22; 7.8 cents from June 8-15; 5.1 cents from June 1-8; 3.9 cents from both May 25-June 1 and May 18-25; and two cents from May 11-18. Beckham, wife, arrive in L.A.Soccer star David Beckham and his pop star wife Victoria arrived at Los Angeles International Airport last night on the eve of his introduction as a member of the Los Angeles Galaxy. The Beckhams were met by paparazzi, television camera crews and fans, but did not answer any questions. The Galaxy announced Jan. 11 that Beckham had signed a five-year contract to join the Major League Soccer team upon the June 30 completion of his contract with Spain’s Real Madrid. Beckham will be paid $6.5 million by the Galaxy this season, according to figures posted on the league’s players’ union Web site, and could make $250 million over the life of the contract, thanks to endorsements. Beckham will be formally introduced as a member of the Galaxy tomorrow at the team’s home stadium in Carson, The Home Depot Center. More than 500 media members from organizations from throughout the world have been accredited for the news conference, which will be televised live by ESPNEWS and selected other outlets. Beckham is expected to make his debut with the Galaxy July 21 against England’s Chelsea FC in the World Series of Football exhibition tournament at The Home Depot Center. Lane closures could affect morning commuteYour morning commute today could be slowed due to closures for maintenance on stretches of both the northbound and southbound San Diego (405) Freeway in West Los Angeles early this morning, authorities said. The No. 1, 2, and 3 lanes on the northbound 405 Freeway from the Marina (90) Freeway to the Santa Monica (10) Freeway were closed at 1:30 a.m., the CHP said. All lanes on the southbound 405 were closed at 1:30 a.m. from Olympic to Venice Boulevards, officials said. All lanes in both directions of the freeway were expected to reopen at 4 a.m., officials said. Triple-digit temps expected today Woodland Hills could reach 102 degrees today, beating out Palmdale which is expected to be one degree cooler, weather forecasters predict. A high of 100 is predicted in Lancaster, 99 in Santa Clarita, 94 in Burbank, 92 in Glendale, and 88 in downtown Los Angeles. An internal Sheriff’s Department investigation was under way today to determine if Paris Hilton received special perks while in the sheriff’s custody, as the deputies’ union complains. The union, which has repeatedly clashed with Sheriff Lee Baca, says deputies have come forward to complain that Hilton had free access to a cellphone even though other prisoners at the Century Regional Detention Center in Lynwood must wait in line to use pay phones during set hours. Hilton also received daily visits from top brass at the Lynwood facility – including a captain who hand-delivered her mail – while others get their mail from inmate trusties, deputies said. last_img read more

Strachan: I might name Scotland team early to draw in fans

first_imgStrachan said that he would not be playing Celtic players given that they had been in action on Sunday afternoon, with the exception of Leigh Griffiths who “might get some minutes”.The manager talked about the benefits of playing Canada but was adamant that Sunday’s qualifier was of paramount importance. Scotland’s qualification chances hang by a thread but Strachan said that three points against Slovenia at Hampden could change everything. “[Expectations] can all be changed with one result,” he said. “That can all go.“I’ve got to say that the feedback I got is that everybody thought that the players against England [in the 3-0 defeat] did as well as they expected them to do. What we didn’t expect was three shots at goal and three going in.“There’s a chance on Sunday to change the whole thing. That’s the great thing about football. “You can change the whole atmosphere with one result”. “They’re going to see a side that plays with high energy and we’re going to try and attack and do a lot of good things that people like to see.“It’s not easy at this time of year for everybody, fans and players. It’s the hard time of the season where you can see the final hurdle but it’s hard work getting there.“We’d like the fans along there to give us support because we need it. We need it. Every team needs that support. “We’ve got it so far. There’s a disappointment with the Scotland fans so far and we understand that but what we’ve got to do in the next couple of games is make them feel good about themselves after the game on Sunday.” Scotland boss Gordon Strachan has said that he might consider naming his team to face Canada early in the hope of attracting more fans to the match. The national team are warming up for the important World Cup qualifier against Slovenia on Sunday with a midweek friendly at Easter Road but ticket sales have been sluggish, with only around 5000 understood to have been sold by the weekend.Strachan said that he was hopeful that there would be “walk-up” support to bolster those numbers and that the backing of a crowd was vital for his players. To that end, he will give thought to announcing the team the day before the game to ignite interest from fans.“We’re hoping [we get a walk-up crowd],” Strachan said. “We’re hoping that with the team we announce, we might announce it a wee bit earlier, you never know.last_img read more

first_imgThe cold season has just begun, and it might just be Mark Mc Clafferty’s favourite time of year!Mark Mc Clafferty, based in Falcarragh, owns MC Services – a professional and affordable boiler servicing business.Mark works all over North West Donegal. Here, Mark shares an insight into why a service before winter could save you money – and a lot of bother:Mark Mc Clafferty – MC ServicesA reliable boiler will see you through the winter and that’s when you really depend on it.  For that reason it’s a good idea to schedule your Boiler Service now before it gets colder. The reasons for servicing your boiler are:Reduce your fuel billsReduce harmful emissionsImprove efficiencyExtend the life of your boilerPeace of mindA service on a badly maintained boiler can reduce the fuel by up to 25%, meaning the cost of the service will be quickly recouped – making financial sense. Excess Rust on a neglected boilerCombustion deposit build up Carbon MonoxideCarbon Monoxide is produced when burning any fossil fuel.  It is a highly toxic poisonous gas. It is odourless, colourless and tasteless meaning it is difficult to detect.Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are:TirednessNauseaHeadachesVomitingDizzinessIt is therefore advisable to fit an audible carbon monoxide detector. Boiler EfficiencyBoiler efficiency is affected by A build-up of combustion depositsDamaged or perforated baffles (cost of replacing)Soot depositsClogged filters and nozzlesAll of the above reduce the ability of the boiler to transfer heat to your radiators and hot water cylinder.Damaged baffle &a replacement baffleCracked baffle – Due to lack of servicing and has a knock on effect on the proper running of the boiler.Did you know – 3mm of soot build-up can reduce efficiency by 8%? Maximum efficiency is achieved by the servicing engineer by adjusting the air-to-fuel combustion ratio and using a flue gas analyser.  Changes in this ratio caused by component wear can stealthily sup up extra fuel.Rust inside an oil pump caused by water in the oil tank.A boiler that had not been serviced and maintained for several years.Sooted up boiler – this has a massive effect on the efficiency of the boilerCracked baffle – Due to lack of servicing and has a knock on effect on the proper running of the boiler. Extend Boiler Life During a service, an engineer will make sure that all controls and sensors on the boiler are working correctly, that it has not corroded or developed any leaks, that unsafe fumes are not being emitted, that all components are working correctly and safely and this will catch developing problems before they lead to something more serious and costly.Peace of Mind A regular service will give you the peace of mind that your boiler is safe and working properly and will see you through the winter when you need it most.
