Deputy Charlie McConalogue has written to the Chair of the Agriculture Committee to hold an emergency meeting to address the growing crisis which sees calve exports limited as we approach the spring season within the farming community.Deputy McConalogue has criticised the Minister for Agriculture and the Department as little has been done to increase calve exports as lairage capacity has not been expanded in Cherbourg, France. He commented “It is evident that little is being done by the Minister or his Department to ensure there is enough capacity to meet the growing numbers of exports of calves to Cherbourg, France. “With time limits on the transporting of cattle we need extra capacity on lairage areas close to Cherbourg Port. At present capacity is maxed at 4,000 at a time. With three sailings per week this means 12,000 calves can be exported a week. We are extremely restricted at peak times and Irish farmers are bearing the costs. We need to ensure every possible dairy bull calve are exported if we can over the next number of weeks.“Estimates have shown that we could get up to 300,000 calves out of the country at calve stage. There is expected to be substantial growth this spring as dairy farmers nationwide continue to grow their herds.”“The Minister must recognise the beef sector is in crisis. If the Minister does not act we will see prices go through the floor again unless we work hard to have as many dairy bull calves exported over the next eight to twelve weeks.“My party has written to the Chair of the Agriculture Committee to seek an emergency meeting to address the blockage issues regarding exports. The Minister must act now to ensure there is no limit on calve exports over the next number of months,” concluded Deputy McConalogue. Yang outlined a product strategy that takes the simplicity and all-in-one portal approach that Yahoo! is famous for – and pushes it into the digital life arena by utilizing email, social networking, mobile and widgets. In Yang’s words, Yahoo! aims to be the “most essential starting point for your life”. The name for this new product suite will be Life!.Dan Farber has a great write-up of Yang’s speech on ZDNet, so in this post I’ll summarize that and give some analysis on Yahoo’s future. The crux of the new Life! strategy is to unite Yahoo Mail, MyYahoo, search and the Yahoo home page in a social networking context. This will be tied together using technologies like structured data, tagging and open standards like OpenID (see Marshall’s post this morning on Flickr adopting OpenID).Dan Farber reported:“Yahoo Mail (communication services) serves as the hub, but the interface also includes third-party applications and social context. Connections are contacts, and based on frequency and volume of communications email is reordered on the strength of the connections. The page also includes updates from connections, showing what is relevant rather than just relatively static inbox.”Interesting to note here that Google is also looking to use Web email as a hub for social networking. So both Yahoo! and Google are really targeting email to get users attention and integrate social web products.Image: Dan Farber, ZDNetZimbra IntegrationYahoo! will include Zimbra in the Life! strategy. Zimbra is an open source mail and messaging platform, which became famous in the web 2.0 world for its mashups ability. It was acquired last year by Yahoo; and so it’s exciting to know that Zimbra will be utilized more fully in Yahoo’s product range.Yahoo Go 3.0 – Widgets GaloreFinally, Yang showed off the new version of its Yahoo Go mobile platform. Labeled Yahoo Go 3.0, it will introduce widgets for things like email and Flickr, enabling those Y! products to be better utilized on mobile phones. Go will also become an open platform for third party widget developers – see our coverage of this last night. As Marshall wrote, unlike Google’s Android OS, the Yahoo! Go platform will work on more than 250 mobile devices that Go already works on.Yahoo has partnered with the likes of eBay, Viacom and News Corp on widgets for Go. Yahoo is also working with LG Electronics and other phone vendors to make widgets run natively on phones. From the user side, a new widgets gallery called MySnippets will give users feeds and services that can be embedded in Yahoo pages. A beta version of 3.0 will be available later today by directing your phones browser to http://beta.m.yahoo.comConclusionIt looks like Yahoo is finally beginning to tie together its many ‘best of breed’ web 2.0 products (Flickr, Zimbra, Mail, Go) into an integrated product offering. Mobile has been an area of development at Yahoo for some time – they appear to be doing more work than Google and Microsoft in the mobile portal / social networking arena, and with Go 3.0 it might crack the mainstream in a big way. Yahoo has also been a leader in terms of open standards – see our coverage of Ian Rogers about the Media Web for one example.Time will tell whether these moves by Yahoo will get them out of the funk they fell into during 2007, but Yang’s speech at CES had many encouraging signs. A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market Crowdsourcing firm Kluster officially launched yesterday at the TED conference, which is underway this week in Monterey, California. Founder Ben Kaufman, who bankrolled the company in part with money from the sale of his last company Mophie, has organized a gimmick over the course of the TED conference he hopes will prove Kluster’s worth. Kaufman intends to let TED attendees — and users from around the world — design a completely new product over the course of 72 hours. The idea behind Kluster is that a group of passionate people working together can come up with better solutions for any decision-making problem than a single person. Whether that is planning an event, designing a new logo, or creating a new product, Kluster believes their system can work.Kaufman got the idea after the Bevy, one of Mophie’s most popular products, was designed by the crowd at Macworld using sketch pads and a precursor to the system that evolved into Kluster. The keychain/bottler opener/iPod shuffle case was one of Mophie’s best selling products, and it was designed in just 72 hours by a crowd, and launched as a product just 2 months later. Kaufman realized he was potentially onto something. The Kluster system works by breaking down products into manageable chunks. For each chunk (or “phase”), people submit what are called “sparks.” Sparks are proposed solutions for that phase. For each spark, other participants can submit “amps” — which are improvements to that idea. Users also assign “watts” to sparks and amps they like. Watts work kind of like investments. You accrue points based on participation and other factors, and can invest those points (watts) in ideas you like. Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Related Posts Then an algorithm that takes into account “each user’s successes, failures, reputation, areas of expertise, and overall history” goes to work to determine which sparks are the best. Companies interested in using the Kluster system, put up cash prizes that are doled out along the way (at the completion of each phase). The whole concept is similar to the one behind Derek Powazek’s new site, Pixish (our coverage). The main difference is that where Pixish is strictly for design related tasks, Kluster is for anything suited to crowd creation. And at Kluster, the crowd is also being relied upon to pick the best result.During the TED conference, Kluster is hoping to use their system to create a new product in 72 hours. It will be unveiled on the last day of the conference, March 1 at 8am. Unfortunately, the Kluster site has been having a lot of problems, so getting in to participate might be easier said than done. There are $15,000 in phase prizes up for grabs. Can lightning strike twice? Or was the Bevy a fluke? Kaufman admitted earlier this month that right now most companies see participation in Kluster as a means of viral marketing to connect with their die hard fans. It will take a few hit products to come out of the Kluster process to prove that it is a viable way for companies to conduct their R&D. Do you think it will work? Let us know in the comments below.
