HR the Disrupter

first_imgThroughout its history, HR has steadily evolved, and now the pace of change is escalating at speeds never seen before. Our modest personnel administration origins have matured into directing the very future of work, and our success is now defined entirely by results, not process. A constant theme of the HR profession has been the transformation of our work. It used to happen every decade or two, but now it is continuous.HR is now poised to be the newest disrupter of business, driving bottom-line benefits through new approaches to finding and keeping the best people. How does disruption differ from innovation? All disruptors are innovators, but disruption goes further. It challenges everything we think we know and everything we do. To be innovative, we think outside the box, but to be disruptive, we may need to lose the box altogether. In our cover story of this month’s issue of HR Magazine, talent and tech guru Josh Bersin of Bersin by Deloitte writes about nine technology trends that are upending old processes and boosting HR performance into high gear—from advanced people analytics tools to the use of artificial intelligence for talent development. Now a $2 billion-a-year business, HR technology is one tool we have to disrupt business. However, disruption doesn’t always require technology. It can be as simple as rethinking traditional workplace paradigms, such as the 9-to-5 norm.Workforce diversity and inclusion programs can also be disruptive. We know that companies with gender and ethnic diversity outperform others by up to 35 percent. But today it takes more than asking questions and eyeing candidates to build a diverse workforce. We should all be exploring next-generation approaches to inclusive, equitable talent management.  To succeed in the 21st century workplace, companies must do more than adapt to the new ways people want to work. They need to create fresh approaches that emphasize innovation, competitiveness and fairness. HR must be ready to innovate—and often disrupt—with solutions that transform today’s businesses and people. “HR as Disrupter” may well be the next evolution of our profession.last_img read more

Updated CanadaIsrael free trade deal includes new chapter on gender ecommerce

first_imgMONTREAL – The updated and expanded Canadian-Israeli free trade deal includes a chapter on gender equality that is the first of its kind in the world, International Trade Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne said Monday.Canada’s new trade deal with Israel also maintains a controversial article that recognizes merchandise from occupied territories such as the West Bank as products of Israel. What’s unique to this trade agreement is the provision that places the chapter on gender equality under the scope of the dispute settlement mechanism of the larger agreement, Champagne said.“We are writing international law today,” Champagne said to Israeli Minister of the Economy Eli Cohen, who travelled to Montreal to sign the deal.“This is the only trade deal in the world with a chapter on gender that is subject to a dispute resolution.”Champagne and Cohen were scheduled to officially sign the updated agreement later on Monday at a private ceremony in Montreal closed to the media. Both governments need to ratify the deal before it enters into effect. The original free trade deal between Canada and Israel came into force in January 1997, which governed the roughly $1.7 billion in two-way merchandise trade between the two countries in 2017.Negotiations to update the agreement began under former prime minister Stephen Harper in 2014 and were concluded by the Trudeau Liberals. The new deal maintains a provision that requires merchandise from areas such as the West Bank to be labelled as products of Israel despite the fact Canada doesn’t recognize permanent Israeli control over that territory, which was occupied in 1967.A Winnipeg man is challenging a decision made by the federal food inspection agency in 2017 that allowed two wines produced in the West Bank region to be sold in Canada with the label “Product of Israel.”Under the trade agreement, “Israel” refers to any territory where the country’s customs laws are applied.Champagne said the new trade deal is in line with international law.“It’s a simple matter,” he said. “In international trade law, the way a territory is defined is the physical territory where the customs law apply.“We think the determination of Canadian food inspection agency is reasonable and acceptable.”The decision to include a chapter on gender equality came at Canada’s behest.Chapter 13 states both countries “acknowledge the importance of incorporating a gender perspective into the promotion of inclusive economic growth.”Cohen told the audience “we will learn from you and implement this (gender chapter) in our future free trade agreements.”“The agreement that we will sign later today (provides) free duties to more than 2,000 items in the food and agricultural sector,” Cohen added. Moreover, the updated deal expands market access for both countries and includes new chapters on issues such as e-commerce, intellectual property and labour.last_img read more

ND Tiwari’s son died due to smothering: Autopsy report

first_imgNew Delhi: Delhi Police on Thursday lodged a case of murder in connection with the death of ND Tiwari’s son Rohit Shekhar. The investigating agency said that the autopsy report pointed to unnatural death caused by smothering.According to police, the case was transferred to the crime branch for further investigation. They are questioning Rohit’s family members, including his mother Ujjwala and his uncle’s son. The investigating agency will also question Rohit’s wife in the case. “We are probing whether the pillow was used for smothering when he might be sleeping,” said sources. “The medical board unanimously concluded that the cause of death in this case is asphyxia as a result of strangulation and smothering. It is a sudden unnatural death, placed in the category of homicide,” the head of the AIIMS’ forensic department, Dr Sudhir Gupta, said. The investigation is focussing whether there is any role of Rohit’s family members behind his murder as after the incident, none of them lodged a complaint. Earlier on Wednesday, DCP (South) Vijay Kumar said that the family members do not suspect any foul play in his death. The probe also revealed there are CCTV cameras installed in Rohit’s house which are being scanned. Facts also came out that some cameras were not working properly which is probed. Police have registered a murder case under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against unknown persons. According to Joint Commissioner (Southern Range) Devesh Shrivastava, Rohit suffered a nose bleed, which his servants reported to his mother. Later, he was taken to hospital where he was declared brought dead on Tuesday. His postmortem was conducted by a panel of doctors. Apart from the domestic help, Rohit’ wife and elder brother were inside the house. At the time of the incident his mother Ujjwala Tiwari, who was admitted at Max hospital, received a call from her house about her son being “unwell and bleeding from the nose” Earlier, while talking to media, deceased’s mother Ujjawla Tiwari said that her son was alright. When reporters asked about some foul play in the incident, she said that there are several things which she will reveal at the right time. “The people who are behind my son’s depression I will reveal their details,” said Ujjawla Tiwari. Rohit Shekhar Tiwari famously fought a long-drawn battle with his father ND Tiwari, who for the longest time refused to accept him as his son. In 2014, after the number of denials, lawsuits and a DNA test, ND Tiwari finally accepted that Rohit as his son. Later, ND Tiwari married Ujjwala Tiwari, the mother of Rohit Shekhar in a ceremony that took place in Lucknow. The police will investigate the case from different angles which include any family dispute, property dispute or any political involvement. with Agency inputslast_img read more

JT Barrett Ohio State offense hoping to tighten screws during spring game

OSU then redshirt-sophomore quarterback J.T. Barrett (16) celebrates after a touchdown during a game against Michigan on Nov. 28 at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Credit: Samantha Hollingshead | Photo EditorGoing into spring camp, Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer had a definite answer for who was going to be the guy behind the center: redshirt junior J.T. Barrett. But beyond Barrett at quarterback, there are many questions of who is going to replace players such as running back Ezekiel Elliott or receivers Braxton Miller and Michael Thomas. With the Buckeyes’ annual spring game set for Saturday at 1:30 p.m., there are several young players looking to make a good impression on Meyer and the offensive coaches. OSU is looking to limit the transition phase to only the spring so it can come into the regular season ready to produce at the high level that is expected, and having the veteran Barrett still at the helm makes that slightly easier. After former offensive coordinator Tom Herman took the head coaching job at Houston before the 2015 season, co-offensive coordinators Tim Beck and Ed Warriner were left with the tall task of replacing him. There were obvious growing pains during the 2015 season, but they seemed to recede toward the end of the year, evidenced by the dominant performances against Michigan and Notre Dame. Meyer said Beck and Warinner are still learning, but, at the same time, they’re helping grow the offense.“(Beck) took over for a very valuable guy, and I expect more out of him and our offensive staff in general,” Meyer said. “We have to do a better job than we did a year ago. I see it happening this spring as far as the growth of the offensive staff.”As the centerpiece of the offense, Barrett has impressed many this spring, including Meyer. Just the fact that Barrett is healthy and getting a chance to take part in these valuable reps is a benefit that he hasn’t been afforded since leaving Texas for Columbus. “He’s having a great spring,” Meyer said. “He’s never been the quarterback in spring practice or in a spring game. We are changing some things on him that were not fundamentally where they needed to be last year. … He is a fast player and we need him to play as fast as he can.”Barrett said he is already working on some of those fundamental changes that Meyer and the offensive staff encouraged him to make. “I am trying to evolve my game to be able to see things faster because the game slows down as you play more,” Barrett said. “That’s just from watching film and transferring what I see onto the field.”That comes from practice, which Barrett said is a key part of what Buckeye fans see on Saturdays in the fall. “We don’t have game players,” Barrett said. “You have to make plays in practice in order to make plays on Saturday.”Two players taking advantage of the practice time are fighting for the top spot in the offensive backfield: senior Bri’onte Dunn and redshirt freshman Mike Weber.Even though Dunn has more game experience at the college level — he has 48 carries for 287 yards in his career — Meyer said both Weber, a high-profile recruit from Detroit, and Dunn are neck and neck to take Elliott’s spot.“As of now, Bri’onte and Mike are still fighting it out, and the young guys have done a decent job,” Meyer said. “No one has separated themselves yet.”The backup quarterback role is another position, in addition to offensive line, that still needs to be decided upon. Even though Barrett has solidified himself as the clear starter, redshirt freshman Joe Burrow is performing at a high level this spring. “He’s doing pretty well,” Meyer said. “I don’t think he’s the athlete that J.T. is right now, but he is becoming a much better runner, his release is night and day of what it was.” Meyer was asked what would happen if Barrett sustained an injury and Burrow had to assume the starting spot. “We would probably lean on the tailback and high-percentage passes,” Meyer said, “But he’s getting close to being game-ready.”With that said, a way for young players, like Burrow, to become game-ready is through the spring game. With fans breaking the national attendance record for spring games last year, Meyer is hoping that will happen again for the sake of the younger players. “I want to see Joe Burrow and Mike Weber perform in front of 100,000 people in the stadium,” Meyer said. “They have never done it. The value is probably the greatest it’s been in my four years here to see the young players respond.”Spring practice is not the stopping point, though, before the football season starts. It’s only a jumping off point, as there is still a lot of work to do before the team is game-ready, Barrett said. “One of the things we like to talk about is development and developing guys, and spring ball has definitely helped,” Barrett said. “Also, we still have summer. That’s the time where I get to work with receivers, especially the ones who haven’t been in. That’s definitely going to help us later on.” read more
