Groups: New EPA Coal Ash Rule a Step Backwards

first_imgRALEIGH, N.C. – Environmental groups in North Carolina are figuring out their next move after the Trump Administration this week rolled back some Obama-era regulations regarding coal ash disposal.Acting EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler said the new rule will provide utilities and states more flexibility in how coal ash waste is managed, while ensuring human health and environmental protections. However, Earthjustice Senior Administrative Counsel Lisa Evans contends the industry will be able to operate coal ash ponds in dangerous areas that are known to be leaking.“It allows them to accept more toxic waste for a longer period of time instead of closing,” says Evans. “It allows them to lift monitoring requirements. It lessens the scrutiny that would be placed on technical certifications. All in all, this is a great step backwards for public health and the environment.”Evans says nearly 95 percent of all coal-ash dump sites have contaminated groundwater with toxins deemed by EPA unsafe to drink. Earthjustice and other organizations are examining the new rule and considering a court challenge. The new rule weakens drinking water protection standards for several hazardous chemicals, including lead, cobalt and lithium. And Evan notes it allows state officials to decide if sites are following regulations, instead of qualified engineers.“What this rule does, therefore, is politicize the science, allow those decisions to be made by a person now who can be influenced by the industry, who may be in programs that are under-staffed, may not have technical knowledge,” says Evans. She adds this is just part one of an extended effort to water down the coal-ash rule.“We will see – perhaps this fall, perhaps early next year,” says Evans, “additional rule makings by EPA that will erode the public health and environmental protections established by the Obama administration.”Here in North Carolina, Duke Energy still continues cleanup work related to the 2014 spill of 39,000 tons of coal ash into the Dan River. It was the third-largest coal ash disaster in U.S. history.last_img read more

Yahoo! Go 3.0 Announced at CES – is Yahoo! Back in ’08?

first_imgA Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… richard macmanus Related Posts Tags:#CES 2008#conferences#web center_img Yahoo! co-founder and CEO Jerry Yang was on stage today at CES and he showed a fascinating glimpse into the future of Yahoo. Yang outlined a product strategy that takes the simplicity and all-in-one portal approach that Yahoo! is famous for – and pushes it into the digital life arena by utilizing email, social networking, mobile and widgets. In Yang’s words, Yahoo! aims to be the “most essential starting point for your life”. The name for this new product suite will be Life!.Dan Farber has a great write-up of Yang’s speech on ZDNet, so in this post I’ll summarize that and give some analysis on Yahoo’s future. The crux of the new Life! strategy is to unite Yahoo Mail, MyYahoo, search and the Yahoo home page in a social networking context. This will be tied together using technologies like structured data, tagging and open standards like OpenID (see Marshall’s post this morning on Flickr adopting OpenID).Dan Farber reported:“Yahoo Mail (communication services) serves as the hub, but the interface also includes third-party applications and social context. Connections are contacts, and based on frequency and volume of communications email is reordered on the strength of the connections. The page also includes updates from connections, showing what is relevant rather than just relatively static inbox.”Interesting to note here that Google is also looking to use Web email as a hub for social networking. So both Yahoo! and Google are really targeting email to get users attention and integrate social web products.Image: Dan Farber, ZDNetZimbra IntegrationYahoo! will include Zimbra in the Life! strategy. Zimbra is an open source mail and messaging platform, which became famous in the web 2.0 world for its mashups ability. It was acquired last year by Yahoo; and so it’s exciting to know that Zimbra will be utilized more fully in Yahoo’s product range.Yahoo Go 3.0 – Widgets GaloreFinally, Yang showed off the new version of its Yahoo Go mobile platform. Labeled Yahoo Go 3.0, it will introduce widgets for things like email and Flickr, enabling those Y! products to be better utilized on mobile phones. Go will also become an open platform for third party widget developers – see our coverage of this last night. As Marshall wrote, unlike Google’s Android OS, the Yahoo! Go platform will work on more than 250 mobile devices that Go already works on.Yahoo has partnered with the likes of eBay, Viacom and News Corp on widgets for Go. Yahoo is also working with LG Electronics and other phone vendors to make widgets run natively on phones. From the user side, a new widgets gallery called MySnippets will give users feeds and services that can be embedded in Yahoo pages. A beta version of 3.0 will be available later today by directing your phone’s browser to http://beta.m.yahoo.comConclusionIt looks like Yahoo is finally beginning to tie together its many ‘best of breed’ web 2.0 products (Flickr, Zimbra, Mail, Go) into an integrated product offering. Mobile has been an area of development at Yahoo for some time – they appear to be doing more work than Google and Microsoft in the mobile portal / social networking arena, and with Go 3.0 it might crack the mainstream in a big way. Yahoo has also been a leader in terms of open standards – see our coverage of Ian Rogers about the Media Web for one example.Time will tell whether these moves by Yahoo will get them out of the funk they fell into during 2007, but Yang’s speech at CES had many encouraging signs. Womens soccer team to host NCAA Tournament games

After finishing the regular season as the second-ranked team in the Big Ten, the Ohio State women’s soccer team will play host to the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament. The Buckeyes will play their first-round game Friday at 7:30 p.m. against Oregon State and a potential second-round game against either Florida or Illinois State. Both games will be played in OSU’s Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.Playing at home is something coach Lori Walker cherishes.“We love being at home,” Walker said. “We’re in the Jesse and we’re thrilled about that. I think that’s a wonderful opportunity for us, to be here in front of our home fans.”The Buckeyes are hoping to shake off the disappointment of a loss in their regular season finale. The 1-0 defeat at the hands of Michigan State kept OSU from winning the program’s first ever regular-season conference title. “I was disappointed for our team, but I was in no way disappointed in our team,” Walker said. “I think that’s behind us, and all we’re worried about now is Oregon State.”Oregon State finished the regular season as the Pac-Ten’s sixth-ranked team, with an overall record of 12-7-1. “They’ve had success in a very difficult conference so we’re going to do our homework and find a way to tactically adjust as we need to,” Walker said. “But really this part of the year is about us playing well, doing the things that we do well and finding a way to continue to score goals.” read more

Inzaghi Lazio not doing enough

We were too soft, missing some really easy passes.“The deadlock was broken by a great Miralem Pjanic goal, but we have to do more in these fixtures. Everyone has to step up and improve, it’s superfluous to talk about one player or another.“It’ll be a tour de force after the break for international duty and frankly we would’ve preferred a different start to the fixture list. We still should’ve done more, though and cannot afford to let our focus slip.”last_img read more

Vinicius proves Lopetegui right after poor Castilla debut

first_imgAfter practically confirming that he wasn’t ready for the major squad, Julen Lopetegui saw how Vinicius failed on his debut playing for Real Madrid Castilla. When Florentino Perez told Julen Lopetegui that he would bring Vinicius to play for the Real Madrid first team from Flamengo, the Spanish manager had a reaction that the president wasn’t expecting. For some reason, the numerous studies that Los Blancos’ president has received about Vinicius Junior during his time at Flamengo were overwhelmingly positive, but the reality is a lot less encouraging for any Real Madrid fan who actually dives into the player’s short-lived history with the club from Rio de Janeiro. It appears that Florentino Perez’s team didn’t do their player analysis right and they may have bought a player who is still underdeveloped for a steep €45 million, and this may have just been because he is very good at dribbling. But when you look at his other stats, a huge red light turns on because this kid lacks a lot of experience for that price tag. Maybe Florentino Perez has been ducked by Flamengo, but let us explain in further detail.Vinicius Jr. starts for Real Madrid Castilla as they face Las Palmas “B” and at 45 million euro becomes the most expensive player to feature in the Spanish 3rd tier (2B) https://t.co/46AlgEjuvw pic.twitter.com/znFVRFqIC3— AS English (@English_AS) August 26, 2018Vinicius’ numbers with Flamengo. When Florentino Perez’s team approached Flamengo to buy Vinicius, the Brazilian player has just begun his development process as his debut came in 2017 without having signed a contract and playing all his first matches as a substitute. In 2018, the youngster started getting minutes for Flamengo in the lower flight Carioca Tournament where he developed a bit more until he started playing in Brazilian Serie A. During his time at the top of the game in his country, Vinicius played a total of 80% of all matches for Flamengo since he started playing until his very last match before he left for Spain. The player’s performance at Copa Libertadores has also been below average, there have been many news outlets that even wrote about Vinicius having incredible performances in the most high-level tournament from the American continent but the reality is a lot less spectacular. At the Libertadores playing for Flamengo, the kid only played 5 games from which he started in 4 and only scored two goals that he got in a single game. Not so spectacular after all.Sergio Ramos, Real MadridZidane reveals Sergio Ramos injury concern for Real Madrid Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Zinedine Zidane has put Sergio Ramos’ availability for Real Madrid’s trip to Sevilla next weekend in doubt after withdrawing him against Levante.Actually, the only tournament in which Vinicius Junior has been a top player was South American under 17 tournament where he scored 8 goals, gave several assists and was named as the best player of the competition. But this can hardly be considered a good section of any player’s resume because he performed well in a single UNDER 17 tournament, this means that Florentino Perez paid €45 million for a player who is not fully developed yet and we may not even get to see him perform at a level that can be worthy of Real Madrid standards. So when questioned lat Saturday about the young star, Julen Lopetegui was as blunt and brutally honest as he could be by saying the following about Vinicius:”He’s a player in the squad who trains with us every day, when he comes with us he can play and when he doesn’t, he can play with Castilla. He’s just arrived and needs time to adjust, training with players of the highest level who will help him to improve.”Poor debut for Real Madrid Castilla. So after all this context about this overpriced player who Florentino bought with a lack of further study and development, Vinicius finally got handed an official debut for Real Madrid Castilla against Las Palmas and his performance was not even close to what the expectation was of his skills. But Lopetegui must be smiling in the back because Florentino can’t say he wasn’t warned, as the young player failed a lot of passes and just wasn’t even close to the level that is usually expected from a player who costs that much money. So the sooner the club president realizes that Vinicius is far from being close to Neymar’s level, the easier it will be for him to accept that he made a terrible mistake and maybe it’s a good idea to send him on a loan to another club that can help him finish his development process. Because we can’t say that Vinicius Junior is not a talented player, he totally is but he is just not ready to play for Real Madrid and he may take a while to get there.A luz que me guia é bem mais forte que os olhos que me cercam. ⚽️?? pic.twitter.com/YmVgDJ0DQ3— Vinicius Jr (@vini11Oficial) August 23, 2018How long do you think it will take Vinicius to reach his true potential as a professional player in Europe?
